APOPKA, Fla. — A man who stopped to help two people after a crash in Apopka was shot and killed, according to investigators.
The suspect accused in the deadly shooting is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
The shooting happened just before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Ponkan Road and Plymouth-Sorrento Road.
According to arrest documents, 26-year-old Raul Vazquez and a woman were traveling together in a pickup truck when it crashed into a black SUV.
Witnesses told deputies the two got out of the truck and began arguing.
Investigators say 56-year-old Daryl Hill then rode up to the scene on a bicycle and stepped in to try to break up the confrontation.
Two witnesses told deputies Hill then tried to get away while shouting for help. Investigators believe Vazquez shot Hill in the stomach.
Hill died from his injuries.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office expressed sympathy for Hill’s family, saying he died while trying to help someone who appeared to be in distress.
Vazquez was arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail. He is charged with murder and is being held without bond.
Deputies also say Vazquez’s account of what happened did not match witness statements.
Vazquez is expected to appear before a judge Wednesday, where more details about the conflicting accounts could emerge.
The investigation remains ongoing.
