Guatemala drug trafficking suspect extradited to Florida on federal cocaine charge

Federal prosecutors say Mauro Ismael Morales Martinez was part of an international cocaine trafficking operation that moved drugs across Latin America for more than a decade

FLORIDA — An alleged member of a Guatemala-based drug trafficking organization has been extradited to Florida to face federal charges tied to an international cocaine distribution operation.

Mauro Ismael Morales Martinez, 51, also known as “Melito,” arrived in the Southern District of Florida following his extradition from Guatemala.

Prosecutors allege international cocaine trafficking conspiracy

According to court records, Morales Martinez participated in a multi-country drug trafficking conspiracy operating from 2012 through 2023.

The organization allegedly distributed five kilograms or more of cocaine across Colombia, Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico, with the intent to unlawfully import the drugs into the United States.

Morales Martinez faces up to life in federal prison

Morales Martinez is charged with conspiring to distribute cocaine knowing or having reasonable cause to believe it would be unlawfully imported into the United States.

If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum sentence of life. A federal judge would determine any sentence after considering federal sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

Guatemala authorities assisted with extradition

The U.S. Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs secured Morales Martinez’s extradition.

Federal officials credited Guatemala’s Public Ministry and National Police, known as Ministerio Público and Policía Nacional Civil, with assisting and coordinating the extradition process.

U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida and DEA Miami Field Division Special Agent in Charge Miles Aley announced the charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynn Kirkpatrick is prosecuting the case.

Case part of Homeland Security Task Force initiative

The prosecution is part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established under Executive Order 14159.

The task force brings together federal agencies to investigate and prosecute foreign criminal cartels, transnational criminal organizations, human smuggling rings and international drug trafficking networks operating in the U.S. and abroad.
