VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A dog surfing event that made its Volusia County debut earlier this year is helping local shelter animals and planning a bigger return in 2027.
Daytona Dog Beach Inc. presented a $9,000 donation to Volusia County Animal Services during Thursday’s County Council meeting. The money was raised through the Hang 8 Dog Surfing Extravaganza, which was held in Daytona Beach in May.
The donation will help support animals at the Volusia County Animal Shelter while they await permanent homes.
“What started as a great day of dogs, surfing, and community fun is now making a tangible difference for animals at the Volusia County Animal Shelter,” Animal Services Director Angela Miedema said.
Daytona Dog Beach Inc. also donated $1,752 to help pay for supplies at Volusia County’s dog-friendly beach areas.
Dog surfing event returning for 2 days
Organizers also announced that Hang 8 will expand from a one-day event to two days when it returns next year.
The 2027 event is scheduled for Sunday, May 30, and Monday, May 31, on the beach behind the Hard Rock Hotel Daytona Beach.
The inaugural Volusia County event drew hundreds of dogs, owners and spectators for surfing competitions and other beachside activities.
Organizers said they plan to expand the surfing competition, entertainment and overall visitor experience as they work to turn Hang 8 into a destination event for Volusia County.
