Historic Capen House cut in two, floated across Lake Osceola to new location

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Part of the historic Capen House in Winter Park was moved Tuesday across Lake Osceola on a barge to the grounds of the Albin Polasek Museum.

A contractor cut the 128-year-old landmark in two pieces for the move.

The move took a little longer than expected, but it eventually made its way safely to the other side of the lake on Tuesday.

"I'm not sure how we can follow up on this," said project director Christine French.

The next mission is to prepare the site and then get ready to bring the other half of the house across the lake.

Crews will now have to piece both sides together and restore some of the house, which will be put up on display for museum visitors, which may be next fall.

The Capen House, built on the lake by Seymour Capen, one of the founders of Winter Park, was going to be demolished, but the group raised more than $500,000 to save it.
