ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A gun was stolen out of an Orange County deputy’s personal car, Orlando police said.
Police said the deputy’s car was burglarized between late Saturday night and Sunday morning on Livingston Street.
They said the deputy's car was unlocked. The deputy is still on the job and has not been punished.
“Knowing that there’s someone out there with a firearm, it’s alerting and concerning,” said Lake Eola resident Lylliam Davila.
Davila lives in the area with her three young children.
“I hope (police) can track it down and get the person,” she said. “Get it off the streets before any damage is done.”
Police would not release the incident report because it’s an ongoing investigation, so the details of how the gun was stored in the car are unclear.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office policy states, “It is the agency member’s responsibility to secure the weapon,” and “Guns should not be stored in the passenger compartment of a car if the car is unattended and if the deputy is off duty. Guns can be stored in the trunk with an approved lock box.”
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said three guns have been stolen from its employees this year.
