MELBOURNE, Fla. — Melbourne police say one man was killed and another was injured in a double stabbing at the Backstreet Lounge early Saturday morning.
Investigators say the suspect, 60-year-old Richard Woodsmall, was at the lounge earlier in the night but had left. Police believe he returned to the establishment around 1:45 a.m. and that's when the incident happened.
“Our investigators responded to the scene at which point we found two victims that had been stabbed,” Melbourne police Lt. Byron Barnes told WFTV.
Woodsmall is accused of stabbing 55-year-old Larry Creech and another man also in his fifties.
“The victim, Larry Creech, died from the injuries he sustained. The other man is still in the hospital and his name is not being released at this time,” Lt. Barnes said.
Witnesses at the bar told police Woodsmall was the aggressor, but investigators are still trying to determine what led up to the stabbing.
A manager at the bar told WFTV Woodsmall would visit the bar from time to time, but Creech was a regular.
Police say the Backstreet Lounge is a quiet place. Since February, there has only been one police call for a minor disturbance at the establishment.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing. Woodsmall was arrested and charged with murder and more charges are expected.
