Republican leaders said they believe they can handle it.

"Lots of planning and lots of action," said Dean Black, chairman of the Republican party in Duval County.

And there's just 10 weeks left to finish that planning.

“We are registering thousands and thousands of volunteers," Black said.

He expects to have 3,0000 volunteers signed up for the RNC by the end of Tuesday.

Right now, Duval County has more than 2,000 cases of COVID-19, including 42 confirmed on Tuesday. Duval is the only county in northeast Florida that is seeing an increase in coronavirus cases.

“Issuing masks, taking people's temperatures, and we are going to deal with this event in a responsible manner," Black said.

Black knows it won't be easy to plan a convention at the last minute, especially with the continuing threat of COVID-19. But he thinks they can handle it.

“We are going to rise to the challenge,” Black said. “Obviously, thousands and thousands coming to our town is a challenge, at different levels. But our leaders are fully up to that challenge.”
