WEST MELBOUNRE, Fla. — 32-year-old Kavan Vishnubhai Patel was rearrested Sunday morning and charged with second-degree murder after a 14-year-old boy he allegedly struck with a vehicle died from his injuries, according to the West Melbourne Police Department.
Patel was taken into custody just after 10 a.m. on Oct. 18 following the death of the teenager.
Police said Patel intentionally struck Russey, who was riding an e-bike, on the morning of Oct. 13 along Cocoanut Grove Avenue. The teen was found unresponsive on the side of the road and was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert with severe injuries.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Orlando Health Children’s Arnold Palmer Hospital, where he was placed on life support. Despite medical care, the teen was taken off life support on Saturday evening and died from his injuries. With his family’s consent, police released his identity and confirmed that his family decided to donate his organs.
Investigators secured an arrest warrant for Patel following the teen’s death, leading to his rearrest Sunday. Police had previously reported Patel’s initial arrest on Oct. 13 after the collision.
Patel is being held without bond at the Brevard County Jail.
