KISSIMMEE, Fla.,None — The city of Kissimmee is adding at least 10 red light cameras at various intersections in the next couple of weeks.
City leaders hope to stop the repeat red-light running at busy intersections.
Offenders within the first 30 days that the cameras are running can expect a warning. After the 30 days is up, violators will get a $158 ticket.
City commissioners approved the cameras two years ago but didn't move forward because they wanted to wait for legislation to pass allowing their use. Red light cameras were then approved in 2010.
Some drivers support the red light cameras.
“Oh, I think it's a good thing,” said driver Elizabeth Williams. “We have to control the speed and it'll be cost effective and we won't need the police officers to stand by. Of course I'm for it.”
Records show there are than 60 red light cameras all over Central Florida with many in Orange County, specifically in Orlando.
