LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A Lake County High School student is making a statement, looking to become his school's first male Homecoming Queen.
And East Ridge High School is rising to the occasion.
"It was shocking at first, but I mean, everyone kind of just accepted," said student Brianna Gonzalez of the moment she learned a male classmate was in the Homecoming running.
“I just heard someone talking about it and then I saw his name on the ballot," Gonzalez added.
School officials say Dillon Gleeson made the homecoming court and the results will be announced Friday during the football game.
Channel 9’s Myrt Price reached out to parents to find out what they thought about it.
"Homecoming where I'm from is a lot different," said one parent.
"Queen is usually for a girl, but if that's what he wants then, that's what it is," said another parent.
“I don't have a problem with that; I don't discriminate," said parent Cathy Pagliazzo.
Price also asked students if they thought the attention would make Gleeson a target of bullies and they didn't think so.
A student told Price that bullying at the school is not as much of an issue as at other schools.
Many students are looking forward to the big day.
"I think it's great that it's happening," a student told Price.
