Maitland woman arrested for DUI after car plunges into Altamonte Springs lake

The driver escaped the submerged car and swam to safety before being arrested at the hospital.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A 26-year-old Maitland woman was arrested on a DUI charge Saturday, Sept. 12, after driving her car into a lake in Altamonte Springs, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:32 p.m. near the intersection of Maitland Avenue and Lake Shore Drive.

Troopers reported that the woman was driving a 2022 Toyota Corolla southbound on Maitland Avenue approaching Lake Shore Drive. The car ran off the right side of the roadway, colliding with a guardrail and fence before entering the lake.

The driver managed to exit the submerged vehicle and swim to safety. She was subsequently transported to Advent Health Altamonte Springs for treatment of minor injuries.

Deputies with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office later arrested the driver at the hospital for DUI while a state trooper remained at the scene with a tow truck to recover the vehicle from the water.

The crash remains under investigation.
