ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — The Altamonte Springs Police Department has charged 65-year-old John Schmalz-Riedt with second-degree murder and firearm charges after a woman was found shot to death at Conrad Court in Altamonte Springs on Sunday afternoon.
Officers responded to the home at approximately 3:15 p.m., where they found an unresponsive adult woman suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel with the Seminole County Fire Department provided aid, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives identified Schmalz-Riedt as a person of interest during the initial investigation into the shooting.
When law enforcement officers located Schmalz-Riedt, he barricaded himself inside his truck with a gun. Following a nearly three-hour standoff with officers, Schmalz-Riedt was arrested. Detectives subsequently established probable cause linking him to the woman’s death.
Schmalz-Riedt faces charges of second-degree murder with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was booked into the Volusia County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
