DELAND, Fla. — A 30-year-old man was shot to death outside a DeLand convenience store and police are still looking for a suspect in the case.
Akeem Birch was found on the ground outside the Friendly Way Convenience Store on Florida Avenue near U.S. 17-92.

Area resident Kevin Taylor said there was a large crowd outside the store and he heard the pop of a gunshot.
“I saw somebody over here that was laying on the ground and there was a bunch of people yelling,” he said. “Turns out the guy ended up getting shot. I saw him even before the cops got here.”
Even after police arrived at the scene a few minutes later, the crowd did not disperse. In fact, Taylor said, things got worse.
“They almost had a riot across the street, right in front of my house,” he said. “There were hundreds and hundreds of people out there.”
Police have not determined a motive behind the shooting and investigators are looking for suspects.
Investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
