Man accused of killing uninvolved driver on I-4 after strip club fight

TAMPA, Fla. — New details have emerged about the St. Cloud man accused of murdering an Orlando man along Interstate 4 near Tampa.

Jerome Hayes is in the Hillsborough County Jail Monday.

Investigators said he shot and killed 47-year-old Fred Turner, Jr., Saturday in a case of mistaken identity.

Investigators said Hayes didn't act alone.

There is another man who was in the passenger seat of Hayes' car, investigators said. They have not released his name but said they are questioning him.

Neighbors of the victim said they haven't seen any family at his apartment since the shooting.

Investigators said has not confessed to the shooting yet.

A candle left at Turner's Orlando doorstep was still burning Monday night.

Neighbors were shocked to hear the circumstances surrounding Turner's murder while driving along I-4.

"It's a shame that he's gone and it's a shame that it happened the way it did," said Turner's neighbor Cary Blas.

Through the use of surveillance cameras, investigators said they were able to piece together what happened directly before Turner was gunned down in his car.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said St. Cloud resident Hayes and an unidentified friend of his were at the Gold Club, a Tampa adult entertainment establishment.

They got kicked out after a fight and decided to wait there for the man involved.

Turner left a business connected to the club and investigators said Hayes and his friend thought Turner was the man they were waiting for.

Investigators will not release the 911 call turner made from his car, but said he called dispatch because someone was following him, a white male in a grey Taurus armed with a firearm.

Tampa police may have lost a chance to immediately respond after investigators said Turner told dispatch he was getting on I-4, out of Tampa police's jurisdiction.

Investigators said he that's when he was transferred to another operator, who then heard shots being fired, allegedly by Hayes as he drove alongside Turner.

Hayes has been in trouble before but never to this extent.

The identity of the other man and if he will face any charges are unknown.
