MARION COUNTY, Fla. — The Marion County sheriff’s call for all licensed gun owners to carry is getting new attention.
Sheriff Chris Blair made the announcement last month, but it’s getting a renewed push as the gun control debate heats up on Capitol Hill.
He and other Florida sheriffs, including Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, have posted YouTube videos, encouraging licensed owners to carry their weapons, following attacks like the one in San Bernardino.

Blair has hosted and taught concealed weapons classes for citizens who want to learn how to properly carry a gun.
“Those who carry firearms responsibly and are confident in their abilities can, and should, be our first line of defense in an active-shooter situation,” Blair said.
Some residents are concerned even people with good intentions might not handle a weapon property under pressure.
“If you’re going to give a license (for) guns to everybody the way they’re trying, (that’s) bad news,” said resident Pat McKessy. “Because I’d be scared all the time.”
Some residents said they agree with Blair’s initiative saying it could prevent a tragedy before law enforcement arrives.
“Say something happens at Publix. You can call the cops or handle it yourself until the cops get there,” said Marion County resident Shawn Kearns.
Blair did point out in his remarks that the FBI says the best way to survive and active-shooting situation is to run, hide or fight.
