SUMMERFIELD, Fla. — A Summerfield man was arrested Monday evening after allegedly firing a handgun into the air as a vehicle drove past his home, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
Bobby Washington Jr. was taken into custody around 6:50 p.m. at his home on SE 145th Place. He faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in a residential neighborhood.
Deputies said the incident happened outside a home near SE 145th Place.
The driver told deputies he was taking his son for a drive around the neighborhood before going to the store when he slowly passed Washington’s home. The driver said he saw Washington walk quickly from a garage toward the road while holding a handgun, then point it into the air and fire one shot.
The driver told deputies he feared Washington was going to shoot him and drove away before calling 911.
The driver’s son, who was riding in the front passenger seat, also told deputies he saw a man come from the garage holding a gun and fire it into the air, according to the arrest report.
Deputies found Washington at home with a green-and-black pistol. He was detained without incident, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators said Washington admitted he stepped outside and fired one round into the air from a Glock 43 after seeing the silver sedan drive slowly past his house.
Washington told deputies the driver did not enter his property, lower the windows or make threats or racial slurs. Still, he considered the vehicle’s presence threatening and described ongoing harassment by the driver, according to the report.
