MARION COUNTY, Fla. — The Marion County School Board has voted to consolidate Wyomina Park Elementary School into Oakcrest Elementary School, effective August 2027.
The decision is part of the district’s newly approved “Future-Focused Operations Plan,” which addresses uneven enrollment across Marion County Public Schools.
Unlike many Florida districts facing overall enrollment declines, Marion County is managing shifts within its student population. Some campuses are significantly under capacity, while others are overcrowded—particularly in the district’s Southwest quadrant.
The district opened two elementary schools in the southwest area last year and a high school this year. One of the new elementary schools is already operating above capacity.
Kevin Christian, Marion County Public Schools’ director of public relations, said the district must balance enrollment to use its facilities and resources efficiently.
“While Marion County Public Schools is not dealing with declining student enrollment like most Florida school districts, we are dealing with shifting enrollments internal to our district, most notably in the Southwest quadrant,” Christian said.
He said the consolidation is intended to address schools that are substantially under- or over-capacity.
“To be most fiscally responsible and operationally efficient, we have to examine capacity levels, especially at schools that are severely under or over capacity, hence the consolidation of Wyomina and Oakcrest,” Christian said.
The Wyomina Park–Oakcrest consolidation is part of a larger district strategy. Under the Future-Focused Operations Plan, the district expects to consolidate two elementary schools in southern Marion County and three in northern Marion County in the coming years.
District officials will begin setting attendance zones for Oakcrest Elementary and nearby schools in the coming months, ahead of the August 2027 transition.
