Massive hornet's nest near Fruitland Park homes has residents on edge

FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. — A Lake County woman said she’s worried about a hornet’s nest that is close to Fruitland Park homes.

“It started out about this size and now as you can see it's huge," said resident Connie Peacock.

Neighbors on Berckman Street said the nest is in a tree is massive and too close for comfort.

"It's scary the bigger it gets, because the bigger it gets, the more that's in there," said Peacock.

Peacock rents one of the units and she said the nest has been growing for the past few months, and it’s becoming a problem.

She said her neighbor has been stung.

"She went to go pick up her cat’s water bowl and there was one in it, and it stung her and my neighbor across the street is allergic,” said Peacock.

Peacock said she’s worried about the neighborhood children.

"I've got little kids next door and I don't want them getting near the tree. I mean it could kill them," said Peacock.

WFTV’s legal analyst Bill Scheaffer said it’s the homeowner's responsibility to remove the nest.

Channel 9 has reached out the owner but has not heard back.

"He's supposed to call the city of Fruitland Park and get a hold of an exterminator and see what they can do," said Scheaffer.

Some neighbors claim they have reported the problem to the city and officials have come out to look at the nest, but did not remove it.
