Megacon draws thousands to convention center as plans for new train are underway

ORLANDO, Fla. — Sixty-thousand extra visitors are expected in Orlando this weekend for the annual Megacon event at the Orange County Convention Center.

It comes as transportation developers move forward with plans to build a train that would make getting to the convention center much easier.

Officials behind the Maglev train said they’ve got the private funding in place to make it a reality.

The drive to the convention center from Interstate 4 to International Drive can be a long one, with lots of backups starting in the downtown area.

Tourism officials announced this week that Orlando is the most-visited place in the United States with 62 million visitors last year.

“Anything that makes it easier for attendees who want to come to Orlando is by far the best thing we can of for Orlando,” said David Ingram, who works for the Orange County Convention Center.

Developers behind the plan for the Maglev train promise their plans are part of that solution.

New potential renderings show the latest glimpse of how the train from OIA to the convention center will look.

“I would love that. That would be fabulous,” said visitor Linda Satterfield.

Satterfield is exactly the person the train would help, with stops at the Florida Mall and along I-Drive.

Maglev leaders said they’re working on agreements with the county, the airport and the Expressway Authority to build the tracks.

They also said an international firm as committed to finding the project and are hoping to finalize that portion in the next three months.
