ORLANDO, Fla. — Five locations that helped shape Orlando’s Mills 50 District are being recognized with new historic plaques.
Mills 50 District unveiled the first five plaques Tuesday during a ceremony at the historic Cameo Theatre on East Colonial Drive.
The plaques honor:
- Cameo Theatre
- Wally’s
- Track Shack
- The Center
- Colonial Photo & Hobby
Each plaque will document the history of the location and the people, businesses and organizations that contributed to the district’s identity. The plaques are expected to be installed at their respective locations in the coming weeks.
“Each of these buildings tells a piece of the Mills 50 story,” said Jason Kelly, chairman of the Mills 50 District Design Committee. “By documenting and sharing these stories, we hope residents and visitors alike will better understand the history and people who have shaped the district.”
The event included remarks from Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioner Roger Chapin and U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost. State Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith and state Rep. Anna Eskamani also attended.
Cameo Theatre owner Jorge Boone traveled from Colorado for the ceremony.
The five plaques represent the first phase of a larger project. Organizers are already developing five additional plaques that are expected to be unveiled in the coming months.
The district’s long-term goal is to create a self-guided historic walking tour highlighting the history of Mills 50.
