More red light cameras could be coming to Orange County; Find out where

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County is looking to add dozens of controversial red-light cameras before the end of the year, and they could be popping up at the county's busiest intersections.

Officials want to add 40 cameras this year, and 40 more in 2013.

“It could help out, because there are a lot of problems with red-light runners,” said Orange County resident Nick Robles.

Other drivers think the cameras are flawed.  Tickets are sent to the owner of the vehicle, but it's impossible to know if the owner was the person who blew through the light, yet they still get the ticket.

“I think it's ridiculous,” said Orange County resident Crystal Gosein.

Most of cameras would be installed along two of Orange County's most popular roads, with seven on State Road 441 and 10 cameras on State Road 50.

In 2011, the county raked in more than $400,000 from red-light violators.  If officials get the new cameras, that number could jump to $3.2 million.

The money has added to the red-light controversy, but WFTV recently studied crash statistics and found out rear-end crashes dropped 57 percent after red light cameras were installed.

There's also been a big reduction in T-bone crashes.

"If it helps out in the end and we reduce traffic violations and crashes, it's going to help out,” said Robles.
