ORLANDO, Fla. — As students return to classrooms, a new national survey finds many parents believe their children’s schools have room for improvement when it comes to cleanliness.
The survey found 39% of parents rated their child’s school cleanliness as excellent.
When asked which areas needed improvement, parents identified:
- Bathrooms: 50%
- Cafeterias: 34%
- Classrooms: 25%
- Gyms and locker rooms: 20%
- Common areas: 16%
- Buses: 15%
“Parents want to know that the places where their children learn, eat and play are being cared for,” said Kristin DiNicolantonio, senior director of stakeholder communications for the American Cleaning Institute.
The organization recommends that families reinforce handwashing before eating and after using the restroom. It also recommends regularly cleaning frequently touched surfaces and using cleaning and disinfecting products as directed.
The American Cleaning Institute commissioned the survey, which was conducted by Wakefield Research from July 31 through Aug. 6. It included 500 U.S. parents and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
The institute represents manufacturers and other companies in the U.S. cleaning-product supply chain.
