MOUNT DORA, Fla. — The race for an at large City Council seat in Mount Dora is getting even closer.
Before a hand recount on Monday, incumbent Nick Girone led challenger Marie Rich by just two votes. So far the city has done two recounts, one using a machine and the other by hand.
"Everyone wants it to be over," said Girone.
Unofficial numbers show that Girone and Rich are tied at 2,350 votes.
"I am so excited, this is great. We're even, that is fabulous," said Rich.
Girone had a two-vote lead following the machine recount, but that disappeared after the hand recount.
Election officials said one ballot was thrown out because someone voted for both candidates.
Officials are also waiting for 16 overseas absentee ballots to arrive. If after that the race is still tied, there will be a runoff election, although in some cities there's a coin toss.
"I think a flip of the coin is a slap in the face to Marie's voters and it's a smack in the face to my voters," said Girone.
While Girone said the race has been nerve-wracking, Rich said she's just excited to still have a chance.
"Just going out there unknown and getting 50 percent, that is like incredible," said Rich.
The official result of the race won't be determined until Friday.
