NATIONAL — NASA is using the world’s largest motion simulator of its kind to help astronauts prepare for the agency’s planned return to the lunar surface in 2028.
The Vertical Motion Simulator at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California recreates conditions crews could experience while piloting a commercial lunar lander to the moon’s surface.
NASA says the simulator allows astronauts and engineering teams to practice parts of a lunar landing before crews make the real trip.
Researchers can also use the simulations to help improve astronaut training and spacecraft systems.
The training is part of NASA’s Artemis program, which is targeting its next crewed lunar landing in 2028.
