ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County Public Schools says 98 probationary teachers have been impacted by the district’s annual staffing recalculation and are not currently assigned to a position for the upcoming school year.
The district says 212 instructional positions were identified for reassignment based on enrollment and program needs.
According to OCPS, all teachers with Professional Service Contracts and Annual Contracts were successfully placed into instructional positions through the process.
That meant some probationary employees, generally teachers in their first year, were displaced to accommodate Annual Contract teachers with the same certification area, as required by contract and employment status guidelines.
Of the 212 instructional positions identified for reassignment, 98 involved probationary employees who do not currently have a position assigned for next school year.
The remaining employees affected by the staffing changes have been reassigned to instructional positions, according to the district.
OCPS says it is working directly with the 98 impacted employees and will provide information about available vacancies and opportunities for reassignment when possible.
However, the district says there are currently just under 20 vacancies, meaning there are not enough open positions to immediately place all 98 employees.
Certification requirements also limit which positions teachers can fill. State rules can restrict teachers from working outside their certified subject areas, with additional restrictions applying at Title I schools.
The district says it remains committed to supporting the affected employees while making sure classrooms are staffed with appropriately certified educators.
The staffing changes come as OCPS adjusts its workforce to account for enrollment and program needs across the district.
