New Center for Women and Families set to break ground in Orlando this week

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A new center designed to expand services for women and families experiencing homelessness is set to break ground in Orlando this week.

The Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida will hold a groundbreaking Wednesday, Oct. 28, for its new Center for Women and Families, according to Orange County.

The more than 105,000-square-foot facility is expected to increase the Coalition’s service capacity by 40% to 50%, county officials said.

Plans include 112 additional short-term residential beds, an on-site health clinic, expanded meal services, childcare and youth programs.

The project will also include more than 20 bridge housing units providing more than 75 beds, according to the county.

Orange County is investing $19.5 million in the project through federal grant programs, while the City of Orlando is contributing another $10 million through its Accelerate Orlando initiative. The project is also receiving additional federal grants and support from community partners.

The Coalition said the new center is designed to bring housing, health care and other supportive services together in one location for women and families experiencing homelessness.

The groundbreaking is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida on North Terry Avenue in Orlando.
