ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Students returning to school on Tuesday will face new restrictions on e-bikes and e-scooters across Orange County Public Schools.
The district approved the new rules at the end of July, and they take effect as students return to campus following the Labor Day holiday.
Under the new restrictions, elementary and middle school students will no longer be allowed to bring e-bikes or e-scooters onto school campuses.
High school students can still ride e-bikes and e-scooters to school, but there’s an important catch: They must have a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit.
The district says the rules are intended to address concerns surrounding e-bikes and e-scooters as more students use them to get to and from school.
There is also a potential enforcement challenge.
School district officials said they are not able to enforce the restrictions against students who park their e-bikes or e-scooters off campus and then walk onto school property.
That means students could potentially leave their devices away from campus before walking to school, though the district says it cannot enforce its campus rules in those situations.
Parents and students who rely on e-bikes or e-scooters for transportation should make sure they understand the rules before heading to school.
