ORLANDO, Fla. — A new Department of Homeland Security regulation takes effect Friday, making it more difficult for certain immigrants to obtain green cards in the United States.
The policy requires immigration officials to evaluate whether applicants will rely on government aid.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the adjustment guarantees that immigrants possess the ability to maintain their own financial independence.
The updated policy is currently being challenged by several legal actions in the court system.
Under the updated policy, immigration officials are required to evaluate individual applicants arriving in the United States to determine their likelihood of relying on public assistance.
