The city of New Smryna Beach has condemned a troubled apartment complex and the residents may be forced out soon.

Roach-infested rooms, buckling floors and caved-in ceilings are just some of the issues that plague the Marchi Aparments on 1050 Wayne Avenue.

Code enforcement went as far as to call the apartments a public health and safety issue to the 50 or so people that live in the complex.

Heidi Withers said ever since she moved in, her family has become ill.

“The mold is getting worse. Me and my two kids are still sick from it,” said Withers. “The floors are still coming up. It’s not getting better.”

Shaquille Stevens moved in in June and said he’s paid close to $7,000 in rent, but said he still does not have heat. He also said the tiles on his floor are loose.

“When you walk in, you slide on the floor because the tiles just move and stuff,” he said. “Fridges being broken and sinks not fitting in like they should.”

Stevens isn’t sure where he’ll go next.

“Probably just stay here until someone comes and knocks on our door,” he said.

The owner of the complex said he did not know how bad the conditions had gotten and said he’s working to fix the problems.

The city said it’s been in contact with the owner, who told city leaders he’s making the necessary repairs.

City leaders said if the owner does not work with them, make repairs and show progress, the buildings will be demolished on May 20.
