ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Channel 9's Steve Barrett is looking into a new system that will help people avoid long lines at the DMV by using a new program that syncs up with their smartphones.
Waiting for your number to be called at the DMV or tag office is one of the most miserable experiences many people can think of, but the new system is expected to change that, according to Barrett.
The new kiosk takes away much of the frustration by sending text messages to your phone with updates on your place in line.
"I think it's awesome," said customer James Mykytka. "We can get other things done while we're waiting to be seen. We're kind of hungry. We thought about going to get something to eat."
Wednesday's wait times were between an hour and a half and two hours. Before the new system, customers would have had no idea how much time they would be waiting.
"The old system you had to sit in there and literally wait for your number to be called," said customer Alyce Pruitt. "At least with this one you can get a text message and come back in when it's time."
"Who wants to get a ticket and sit in here with 50 smelly people, you know?" said Mykytka.
The system lets users get status updates, cancel their place in line or opt for an appointment.
Another feature is to move your place in line lower in the queue if you're unable to make it back in time.
