New tropical wave off Africa designated Invest 96-L

The next named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season will be Dolly

ORLANDO, Fla. — The National Hurricane Center has designated a tropical wave off the coast of Africa as Invest 96-L.

The system has a 60% chance of developing during the next seven days as it moves west across the Atlantic.

Invest 96-L had maximum sustained winds of 25 mph and was moving west at 8 mph Monday afternoon, according to Severe Weather Center 9.

The system could become better organized this week before encountering less favorable conditions by the end of the week.

Most forecast models turn the system well offshore. Some artificial intelligence models bring it closer before turning, so Severe Weather Center 9 meteorologists are monitoring it closely.

The next named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season will be Dolly.

The peak of hurricane season is a little more than two weeks away.
