LAKELAND, Fla. — A 13-year-old boy named Kailebe has received a vehicle modification featuring a wheelchair lift installed on the back of his family’s truck. The equipment was provided by the nonprofit organization Wheelchairs 4 Kids and sponsored by the Gerner Family Charitable Foundation.
Kailebe was diagnosed with Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy nearly four years ago. As his mobility needs increased, transporting his equipment presented challenges for his family. The newly installed lift allows his family to safely transport his wheelchair for daily trips, including school, medical appointments, and community outings.
In addition to navigating his condition, Kailebe participates in research studies designed to help medical professionals better understand Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy and improve treatment options for children.
Outside of school, Kailebe enjoys playing video games, swimming, and visiting nature areas, with raccoons and turtles being his favorite animals. He also collects coins, Pokémon cards, squishy fidgets, miniature ducks, and No. 2 pencils.
Wheelchairs 4 Kids provides wheelchairs, home and vehicle modifications, and other required medical equipment at no cost to families through its Let’s Roll program. The nonprofit also operates an inclusion program called Wheely Fun Days, which organizes social events throughout the year for the children it serves.
