Nonprofit organization gives wounded veteran mortgage-free home in Kissimmee

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Army Staff Sgt. Giovanna Moreno and her two sons will be welcomed Wednesday into their newly-modified Kissimmee home, gifted by the nonprofit organization, Building Homes for Heroes.

Moreno is a single mother and was wounded while serving in Iraq.

Building Homes for Heroes builds and modifies homes, and gifts them mortgage-free to wounded veterans and their families.

In a news release, the organization said that during Moreno’s decade of service, “many harrowing experiences contributed to Staff Sergeant Moreno's physical and psychological injuries, including exposure to small arms fire and an IED explosion during her four-year deployment to Iraq.”

The organization said Moreno suffers from PTSD, seizures, a traumatic brain injury, migraines, hearing loss in both ears, tinnitus, a lower back injury and a right shoulder injury. The home was modified to accommodate Moreno's injuries.

In November, Building Homes for Heroes will be gifting seven homes and breaking ground on three homes throughout the United States in honor of Veterans Day.
