LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — Thursday marks the peak of hurricane season, and Lake County Fire Rescue is reminding Central Florida residents that preparing before a storm threatens can make all the difference.
Fire department leaders are urging residents to have an emergency plan in place and make sure essential supplies are ready before the next storm approaches.
Chief Jan Otero with Lake County Fire Rescue says residents should also take steps around their homes to reduce potential hazards.
“Before the storm, it’s important to secure any loose items that can become airborne debris,” Otero said. “Your smoke alarms and fire safety equipment are working properly.”
Officials say items left outside, such as patio furniture and other loose objects, can become dangerous projectiles in strong winds.
Residents should also make sure they know where they will go if they need to evacuate and have emergency supplies readily available.
After a storm passes, fire officials say safety concerns don’t end.
One of the biggest dangers can be downed power lines. Department leaders are warning residents to stay away from any fallen or damaged lines because they could still be carrying electricity.
Officials recommend keeping a safe distance and reporting downed power lines to the appropriate authorities.
