ORLANDO, Fla. — A man was caught on camera going door-to-door checking for unlocked cars during Hurricane Matthew and made off with eight firearms he found in an unlocked car, the Orlando Police Department said.

The unidentified man found the car parked at a house in MetroWest Thursday night, police said.

The owner, John Anderson of Palm Bay, had driven to Orlando to stay with friends during the storm, an incident report said.

He left the car unlocked overnight with five rifles and two handguns in the trunk, which he found missing Friday, the report said.

Because the car was wet, investigators were not able to life any fingerprints from it and are now working to identify the thief and recover the guns before they get into the wrong hands.

Orlando police also said the case is a reminder of why it is important to lock your car, especially when there are valuables inside.
