Orange County 19-year-old accused in 7 armed robberies facing murder charge

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 19-year-old man is facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of a teenager found shot next to his electric scooter in February.

Khristopher Campos was already in the Orange County Jail after confessing and being arrested in connection to seven armed robberies.

He’s the third person to be charged in Kevin Padilla’s death.

Campos is accused of supplying the weapon used to kill the 18-year-old on Feb. 6 during a botched robbery.

Investigators believe Campos’ deadly crime spree began at 1:30 a.m. that day.

He and two friends allegedly lured Padilla out of his home on Rio Pinar Lakes Boulevard.

The high school student was shot in the head while riding his scooter, investigators said.

Later that morning, authorities said Campos and a female accomplice committed seven armed holdups at nearby convenience stores.

Beginning at 5:30 a.m., their alleged rash of armed robberies started on East Colonial Drive.

Six minutes later, they hit a Kangaroo Express on Lake Underhill Road, investigators said.

Nearly 90 minutes after that robbery, they allegedly knocked off two stores back-to-back on Curry Ford Road.

At 6:53 a.m., the holdup alarm sounded on SunVista Way and again in 10 minutes on Pershing Avenue.

The Sunoco on Dean Road was hit at 7:11 a.m.

Mohamed Mattar’s store was among the targets.

“Told him to empty the register and pulled the gun on him,” Mattar said.

The suspected weapon was ditched in a nearby lake, but never found.

“He didn’t seem like someone that would kill someone, just a hungry kid going the wrong way about getting money,” Mattar said.

Campos has been in the Orange County Jail since his February arrest on robbery charges.

Detectives charged him with Padilla’s murder based on evidence from cellphone records.
