Orange County homicides have residents on edge

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — There have been a dozen homicides in Orange County since the beginning of the month.

Last week, two men were found shot to death, just two miles apart.

Niger Loria Canul and Joel Salado's deaths are among seven homicides in the last 10 days that remain unsolved.

The scenes are similar.

"That's terrible.  That's got to change," said resident Sammy Baker.

"On the same night, it's scary," said resident Terry McKee.

The seven homicides are without a named suspect or person of interest, and most are in Orange County's Sector 4 on the southwest side.

"They (authorities) need to get out there and be more in the public eye make themselves known," said McKee.

Despite the alarming number of violent crimes in just two weeks, many other cases have been solved quickly.

On Tuesday, Jarvis Akins was arrested on charges of shooting of Edwin Roman after his body was found dumped on Gwynne Avenue.

Also, a shooting outside the Ramada Inn near Orlando International Airport was determined at the scene to be a murder-suicide.

Based on Channel 9's archives, all appear to be either domestic in nature or targeted.

But that doesn't make residents living near the crimes feel any better.

"I hope we can get it under control because it's getting out of control," said McKee.
