ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orange County School District plans to meet with Audubon Park residents Wednesday night to discuss building a new K-8 school.
The school is scheduled to be built following the demolition of another school that was abandoned this past year on Falcon Drive.
The school has been home to four different elementary schools within the past five years, but is now vacant.
"It has been abandoned for a while now, it's an eyesore and I think it is a great idea," resident Freddy Ball said.
The district said the school is going to help relieve over populated schools like Glenridge Middle School, a portion of Fern Creek and Audubon Park Elementary.
The district said Audubon Park was built for 800 students, but is now at 172 percent capacity.
The plan to build a school large enough to house everyone isn't sitting well with every resident.
"I am not real wild about a K-8. I prefer it stay an elementary school because I think there will be a lot less traffic," resident Valerie Bock.
The district said they plan on presenting the designs at Wednesday's meeting and listening to any concerns from residents.
"We are going to work hard with the neighbors to make sure that this is a wonderful community amenity," senior manager of Facilities Communications for Orange County Public Schools Lauren Roth said.
Roth said the school will be built in a way that is inviting to the community.
"Hopefully they won't have to build portables right after they build the new school you know," resident Mark Maddox said.
Wednesday's meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Audubon Park Elementary.
The new school is scheduled to open in 2017.
