Defense claims woman accused of fatally stabbing 11-year-old daughter ‘is getting help’ to be deemed competent

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A woman accused of stabbing her 11-year-old daughter 15 times because she believed she was having sex with men was due in court Thursday for an competency hearing.

Officials charged Rosa Rivera with second-degree murder after they said she killed her daughter, Aleyda Rivera, in March of 2019.

She was not in court and represented by her defense Thursday, who told a judge she is “getting help” to be deemed competent to stand trial.

Records said Rivera arrived at a relative’s home one day and loudly knocked on the front door for an hour while accusing her mother’s boyfriend of having a sexual relationship with her daughter.

Rivera left before returning to the home with her daughter’s body in the car. Rivera then made her way to the hospital with her daughter’s body before becoming combative with responding officials.

Orange County Sheriff John Mina said there was no evidence found to prove her daughter was engaged in sexual relations or was being assaulted.

In addition to the second-degree murder charge, Rivera also faces a charge for attacking a corrections officer inside the Orange County Jail.

The judge wants to set a trial date as soon as Rivera is ruled competent.
