Orlando businesses damaged by water from faulty sprinkler

ORLANDO, Fla.,None — Several businesses in downtown Orlando were damaged by leaking water.

The damage cost business owners thousands of dollars in lost income.

The water rained down from an upstairs unit at 54 West Church Street Thursday.

Officials said it spilled into Gino's Pizza & Brew, Amura Japanese Restaurant and Five Guys.

"The water just poured completely out," said Gino's manager JC Romo.

Officials said the water leaked from a unit that is under construction.

"Workers are making way for the Mad Cow Theatre, which will rent the property from the City of Orlando," spokeswoman Cassandra Lafser said.

Officials said a sprinkler system also busted a couple of weeks ago and caused damage to Amura.

A worker told WFTV the restaurant had to close for three days.

Then, on Thursday, officials said a worker forgot to plug a section of the sprinkler system after it was repaired.

Lafser told WFTV when the sprinkler was turned on, water went everywhere.

The contractor's insurance company said it is dealing with claims submitted by the businesses.

Officials said Gino's lost nearly $5,000 in business and Amura estimated it lost at least $15,000.

Property damage appeared to be minimal.

Business owners said they are glad the flood happened before the NBA All-Star weekend in Orlando.

"I'm happy this week and not next," Romo said. "You know what I mean?"
