ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Health is launching a series of breast cancer screening events in Orange and Osceola counties, encouraging people who are due for mammograms not to wait until Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
“Early detection is so important because it can drastically improve outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. Jeffrey Smith, a breast cancer surgeon with the Orlando Health Cancer Institute.
The hospital system announced the following “Sip & Screen” events:
- Aug. 25: Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital
- Sept. 26: Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital; scheduling only
- Oct. 21: Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital
Attendees will be able to receive mammograms or schedule future screenings while enjoying mocktails, hors d’oeuvres and other activities.
“This has been a collaborative effort among our South Region hospitals to offer different events through the late summer and fall to provide additional access to our community,” said Philip Koovakada, senior vice president of Orlando Health and president of Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital.
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.
