ORLANDO, Fla. — Leaders from Orange County and Orlando are sitting down with residents on Wednesday evening to talk about one of the area’s biggest traffic concerns, Narcoossee Road.
The focus is on the growing congestion between the Osceola County line and S.R. 528, as development continues to bring more drivers to the area.
“Traffic doesn’t know any boundaries,” Tom Keen, an Orlando commissioner, said. “We want to make sure we’re doing this together.”
Cooperation could be key, as several jurisdictions are involved regarding Narcoossee Road in the Lake Nona area.
Including the City of Orlando, Orange County, and the Central Florida Expressway Authority.
“We have three separate jurisdictions, and it does complicate the issue a little bit,” Keen said.
While there is significant development in the Orlando and Orange County area along that corridor, Keen said much of that traffic is coming from continued development to the south.
“Most of the traffic right now is coming from Osceola County,” Keen said. “They’re building a lot of subdivisions down there. When they do that, it adds traffic to Narcoossee.”
Leaders said simply widening the road may not be the answer. Keen said there is limited space left to build, meaning improvements could instead include additional turn lanes and other targeted changes. The town hall will also discuss traffic signal timing improvements and updates from the Orlando Utilities Commission and CFX.
CFX is studying S.R. 534 as part of the broader transportation conversation. It’s a 14-mile, limited-access toll road that extends from S.R. 417 near Boggy Creek Road in Orange County to Nova Road in Osceola County.
Keen said funding could play a major role in what happens next. If revenue falls short of expenses, he warns that projects like sidewalks and road infrastructure could be affected.
Wednesday’s town hall is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Lake Nona High School.
Keen said commissioners plan to continue hosting town halls throughout the year as leaders work to address traffic and growth across Central Florida.
