Orlando's historic Amtrak station gets $2 million renovation

ORLANDO, Fla. — City leaders celebrated the renovation of Orlando's historic Amtrak train station Monday morning.

The 89-year-old train station south of the downtown area services around 160,000 people a year.

"We would never be able to build anything this gorgeous and beautiful with this amazing architecture today," Council Member Patty Sheehan said.

The much-needed $2 million makeover was a big money-saver compared with building a new facility.

"This is something that is incredible. It is cheaper than it would have been to build anything new," Sheehan said.

The wood windows and tiles have been restored throughout the entire building. In addition, crews brought back the original paint color and updated the roof.

"With Amtrak and all the problems they are having with all the infrastructure, this is something they can point out and be proud of," Sheehan said.

The train station, built in 1926 for $500,000, has been a critical rail stop for Orlando Health employees.
