KISSIMMEE, Fla. — An 85-year-old man was detained Friday after allegedly shooting his son in their Kissimmee home. The victim, a man in his 50s, was airlifted to a hospital and is currently in surgery.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the suspect has a diagnosis of dementia. The incident took place shortly after noon in the Westmoreland neighborhood, where the father and son lived together.
Osceola County Sheriff’s Office records show ongoing conflict at the residence, with deputies responding three times in the past 10 days, including on the day of the shooting, to address verbal disputes between the father and son.
Law enforcement reports that hospital officials confirmed the man was undergoing surgery for his injuries on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, detectives began interviewing the father to understand the events that led to the gunfire.
Detectives are currently evaluating whether to formally arrest the 85-year-old man or place him under a Baker Act psychiatric hold.

A shooting at a local residence resulted in an elderly male suspect being taken into custody and a male victim being airlifted to the hospital.
The Osceola Sheriff’s Office and Channel 9 team are currently on scene, awaiting more details as the investigation develops.
Deputies confirmed that the incident occurred around 12:42 p.m. in a neighborhood in Westmoreland, Kissimmee. Upon arrival, they found an adult male victim who had been shot.
Law enforcement reports that an elderly man at the same residence was arrested without incident.
