Over 53,600 students finished Florida Virtual School driver education course

The online program meets Florida’s driver education requirement for teens seeking a learner’s license

ORLANDO, Fla. — More than 53,600 students completed Florida Virtual School’s Driver Education course during the 2025-26 school year, the district announced Thursday.

The milestone follows changes to Florida’s requirements for first-time drivers under 18, who generally must complete an approved driver education course before obtaining a learner’s license.

The FLVS Driver Education course is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and meets that requirement.

Students learn traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, road safety and responsible decision-making. The course also includes simulated driving activities that let students apply those lessons to realistic situations.

“Learning to drive is a significant milestone, and with that milestone comes important responsibilities,” said Deborah Adams, an instructional leader at FLVS.

The course is available through FLVS Flex to Florida students attending public, private and charter schools, as well as those in home education programs.

“Not every student has access to driver education through their local school,” said Derek Stewart, FLVS driver education coordinator. “Through FLVS Flex, students across Florida can learn the fundamentals of safe driving, regardless of where they attend school or how they receive their education.”

FLVS said more than 1 million students have completed its Driver Education course since the program launched.

The district’s Teen Driver Safety Club is also sponsoring events in recognition of National Teen Driver Safety Week.
