Oviedo leaders consider smoking ban on city property

OVIEDO, Fla. — Smoking, whether it’s real cigarettes or e-cigarettes, could soon be banned from certain places in Oviedo.

The city wants to make all of its parks smoke-free zones, including its latest development, Oviedo in the Park.

It’s an idea resident Brenna Swan fully supports.

She’s had to tell people in parks to stop smoking at parks around her children.

“It’s just one of those things that I think if a nasty habit and we don’t need it,” said Swan.

The proposed ordinance would ban all tobacco use at parks including the use of e-cigarettes.

“If the Parks and Rec employees are notified of someone smoking, they’ll simply call OPD,” said Oviedo Mayor Dominic Persampiere.

Police can then fine the smoker $50 for a first offense.

The smoking ban wouldn’t just apply to public parks.

City property would also be off limits too.

That means employees and visitors at City Hall and police headquarters wouldn’t be allowed to smoke on city-owned property.

“They have special zones they are allowed to use, but the goal is to eventually have a non-smoking workforce if we can,” said Persampiere.

The city will take up the ordinance at its meeting Monday.
