Oviedo Medical Center debuts 512-slice cardiac CT scanner

ORLANDO, Fla. — Oviedo Medical Center has introduced a cardiac computed tomography scanner featuring up to 512-slice imaging capabilities at its facility in Seminole County. The high-speed system is designed to capture detailed images of the entire heart in a single heartbeat.

The hospital, which operates as part of HCA Florida Healthcare, added the technology to enhance diagnostic care for Central Florida heart patients. The new equipment allows physicians to evaluate cardiovascular conditions with greater speed and precision through noninvasive examinations that can identify potential heart disease.

How the new cardiac CT scanner works

The scanner is designed for coronary CT angiography, a noninvasive procedure that creates detailed views of the coronary arteries. These images help medical teams detect plaque buildup, vessel narrowing and potential blockages that could restrict blood flow to the heart muscle.

To improve diagnostic accuracy, the system incorporates artificial intelligence-assisted imaging, advanced motion-correction technology and automated workflows. These features work together to enhance image quality, shorten scan times and create a smoother experience for patients undergoing evaluation.

The technology also provides advantages when scanning patients with elevated heart rates or irregular heart rhythms. Those conditions can pose challenges for traditional cardiac imaging devices, which may require longer scan times or produce blurred images during rapid cardiac motion.

Expanding cardiovascular care in Seminole County

Hospital leadership said bringing high-slice CT technology to the area expands local access to specialized medical equipment. Cameron Howard, chief executive officer of Oviedo Medical Center, noted the significance of the investment for residents in east Seminole County.

“This is a gamechanger for cardiovascular care in our community,” Howard said. “We’re bringing some of the most sophisticated cardiac imaging technology available right here to Oviedo. With the ability to capture the entire heart in a single heartbeat, this investment reflects our commitment to making advanced heart care more accessible and giving patients exceptional diagnostic capabilities close to home.”

Clinical leaders also highlighted how the equipment will aid doctors during patient evaluations and treatment planning. Dr. Bob Shaver, chief medical officer at Oviedo Medical Center, explained how the scanner supports daily clinical decisions.

“For patients who need a coronary CT angiogram, this technology offers a significant advantage,” Shaver said. “The ability to capture highly detailed images of the coronary arteries quickly and accurately gives our physicians a powerful tool to evaluate heart disease, guide treatment decisions and provide a more efficient, comfortable patient experience.”

Additional diagnostic capabilities

In addition to specialized cardiac imaging, the new CT scanner can perform a wide range of general diagnostic examinations. The system expands the hospital’s cardiovascular offerings while linking patients directly to the statewide HCA Florida Cardiovascular Network for comprehensive heart, lung and vascular care.

Oviedo Medical Center is a 96-bed acute care hospital located at the intersection of Red Bug Lake Road and State Road 426, adjacent to State Road 417. The facility provides medical and surgical inpatient units, robotic surgery, intensive care, telemetry, cardiac catheterization, cardiopulmonary services, labor and delivery and round-the-clock emergency care.

In addition to its main campus, Oviedo Medical Center operates three 24-hour freestanding emergency care facilities in Central Florida. These sites include HCA Florida Baldwin Park Emergency, HCA Florida Alafaya Emergency and HCA Florida Maitland Emergency.

The facility belongs to HCA Florida Healthcare, a statewide network comprising 11,200 physicians and 80,000 colleagues across more than 670 connected care sites. The network manages nearly 12.8 million patient encounters each year through hospitals, physician practices, urgent care centers and emergency rooms.

HCA Florida Healthcare also serves as a medical training provider, supporting 153 graduate medical education programs across 29 hospitals. In 2025, the parent network provided more than $1.1 billion in uncompensated care and contributed over $3.5 million to community organizations across the state.
