KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Partin Settlement Elementary School will use a $15,000 grant to add sensory tools and emotional regulation resources to its classrooms, according to an announcement from The Calm Caterpillar.
The initiative is intended to help students recognize their emotions, practice breathing exercises and develop coping skills during the school day.
The company’s founder, Sarah Habib, is scheduled to visit the Osceola County school Wednesday, Oct. 28, to deliver the materials and lead training for teachers and staff.
What the classroom resources include
According to the announcement, the resources include weighted plush toys, handheld breathing tools, expandable breathing balls, emotion-identification posters and mindfulness curriculum guides.
Teachers will be able to incorporate the materials into classroom routines to give students opportunities to practice calming techniques.
The Calm Caterpillar develops sensory products and instructional resources for schools and families.
“Every child experiences big feelings, and learning how to manage those emotions is a skill that can make a difference well beyond the classroom,” said Habib, the company’s founder and CEO.
Building on the school’s behavior program
The initiative is intended to complement Partin Settlement’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program, according to the announcement.
The school’s “Pioneer Three” principles encourage students to be respectful, be responsible and be positive problem solvers.
The Oct. 28 visit will include training on using the new resources to support emotional regulation in classrooms, company representatives said.
