No charges after woman accidentally shoots, kills boyfriend in Volusia County

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. — A man who was shot in Daytona Beach Shores while trying to teach his girlfriend how to protect herself with his rifle has died.

Investigators said the shooting happened at a home on South Atlantic Avenue.

Katie Begtrup, 24, told authorities her boyfriend, Robert Branton, 31, was showing her how to use the shotgun and she accidentally shot him in the leg, officers said.

In the 911 call, Begtrup tells the dispatcher, "Hey, I just shot my boyfriend on accident. It was a total accident. I need you to come here ASAP."

Branton was taken to Halifax Hospital Port Orange, where he later died.

Neighbor Doug Horchler told Channel 9 he spoke to Branton just before the shooting. He said Branton worried about problems in the area after being harassed by another neighbor.

"I think he was a little concerned about safety. It's sad when something like this happens to you from a loved one," he said.

In the last year, police have responded to the apartment complex four times for random incidents.

Horchler said most of the residents got along and that he knew Branton sold cars at a local dealership and loved watching the sunrise.

Begtrup has been detained and is being questioned by authorities. She has not been charged.
