Police: Man fatally struck by Dish Network van in Cocoa

COCOA, Fla. — A 31-year-old man died Saturday afternoon after he was run over by someone driving a Dish Network service van in Cocoa, the Cocoa Police Department said.

The van’s driver struck Nathan Vandegrift shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday as he crossed U.S. 1 at Peachtree Street, said Yvonne Martinez, a Cocoa police spokeswoman.

“According to multiple witnesses, the driver of the van ran the red light at the intersection and struck the pedestrian as he was crossing,” Martinez said. “The driver remained on scene and spoke with investigators.”

Vandegrift was hospitalized in critical condition, but he died shortly after 4 p.m.

Witness Vanessa Henry said she and her infant child were preparing to cross the street when the crash happened.

“The man was crossing. He had the right of way. And [the driver] was going 70 mph,” Griffin said. “If I would've went, he would've hit me, but instead he hit the man. That's why I stopped. But if it was me, me and my baby would’ve been gone.”

Police haven’t publicly identified the driver.

Martinez said the driver could face charges. %
